Since I became a Filipino virtual assistant, it’s only this year that I realized the importance of attending local seminars and workshops. I used to think that doing so would take a toll on my time and earnings. After all, I get paid by the hour. And I work for foreign clients anyways. So what’s the need? Why pay fees, deal with the traffic and lose precious sleep just to be there? Below are my thoughts.
Filipino Virtual Assistant: Why Attending Local Events Is Recommended
New, detailed knowledge
Local events, due to time constraints, need to filter and downsize the information they offer. So if the topic is about online writing, you can rest assure that every minute is spent accordingly. And yes, you won’t be distracted because you don’t have to surf all of Google’s pages or browse your FB.
Even better are events specific to your niche, if available. For example, in the recent blogger-related seminars I attended, iBlog 12 and BlogEx, I learned a lot. In iBlog 12, I became aware of copyright issues in the Philippines, cyberbullying, and the laws surrounding those. And all these knowledge will come in handy when I decide to take in local clients. Plus, Ms. Janette Toral, owner of Digital Filipino.com Club, agreed to pose with me for a picture!
BlogEx, on the other hand, offered tidbits of information, from content creation to social media marketing to monetizing a blog. Yes, I could have learned all these from my best friend Google, but then, I’ll have to spend a lot of time with the research. In BlogEx, the tiny portions were served on a silver platter. And, yes, Engr. Grace Bondad Nicolas, Tag Media‘s COO, also agreed to have her picture taken with me in it.
A Filipino virtual assistant who works solo most of the time naturally seeks the company of like-minded individuals. After all, we are all social creatures, right? And who best to understand that need than fellow freelancers? You get to share your thoughts on particular topics, firsthand reviews of tools and apps that VAs use, or simply exchange jokes or what have yous during breaks.
Who doesn’t love freebies? I am a fan of anything free. In iBlog, I got a beautiful black T-shirt with their logo. In BlogEx, I had quite a loot from its exhibitors: cookies, pens, cardboard fans, coco drink and more.
With the holidays fast approaching, you can expect more get-togethers, seminars, and workshops. The OFF group admins, for instance, will soon hold a series of meetups with members in and out of the metro.
Freelancing Ph, on the other hand, will have a Freelancer Forum very soon. You can register here: http://www.freelancing.ph/events/freelancer-forum-ph-2016/
Yes, when a Filipino virtual assistant like you attend such events, you’ll lose some sleep and income. But the benefits you can gain are truly priceless.
